SBN Contributor Bernat Font is starting a monthly study group in September. The group will review and explore basic notions and doctrines of the dharma; in this sense, it will be a sort of ‘Buddhist literacy’ class. Below is a fuller description of the study group (translated from Catalan):
The study group ‘Foundations of Buddhism’ (GEFB) is a new activity of the Secular Sangha. These are monthly sessions, between 1 1/2 and 2 hours, where we will acquire a knowledge base of Buddhism on which to build, establish connections between concepts, and relate our personal experience to the teachings. Each session will discuss one of the formulas or ‘lists’ of Buddhism, to acquire a general notion of what it is about, what its meaning or purpose is, and what place it occupies in the dharma tree. We will also spend time meditating.
Registration is for four months and, as there is only one session per month, a certain commitment is required. However, the sessions will be recorded on video in case you miss one. The material will be for exclusive access. A forum-type system will be established so that, between sessions, participants can ask questions, talk, and share material with each other.
This activity works with a tiered fee of 60 € – 100 € per semester. Everyone chooses what they think is most correct and appropriate to their circumstances within this window. If the minimum amount is too much for your current situation, detail it in the inscription: following the philosophy of generosity of the Secular Sangha, no one should be left out of the study group for not being able to afford it financially. The fee must be paid in one go, and may be made by various means; an email with the details will be sent. Once the study group has started, no refunds will be made, except in exceptional cases.
Dates: September 6, October 4, November 8, December 13.
Time: From 5pm to 7pm, approx.
