SBN's monthly, online discussion group had its first meeting in January 2021 and has become an important forum and source of connection for a group of secular Buddhists in various regions of the world.
After several months, we decided to create four sub-groups so that individuals could explore specific areas of interest related to secular Buddhism:
- Exploring Key Concepts in Secular Buddhism - Focusing on Stephen Batchelor's fourfold task and other basic elements of a secular approach to the dharma
- The Future of Secular Buddhism - Examining the relationship of secular Buddhism to other forms of Buddhism and envisaging new forms of sangha
- Secular Buddhism and Psychotherapy - Relating the perspectives and practices of secular Buddhism to everyday life, including difficult emotions and challenges
- Socially Engaged Buddhism and Political Action - Exploring how we can integrate key Buddhist insights with the theory and practice of radical politics
Since the sub-groups were formed, they have become 'mini-sanghas' for their participants. Two of the sub-groups have been meeting in between monthly meetings to further discuss key issues.
The level of interest in and commitment to the overall group has grown. At the December 2021 meeting, we agreed to modify the format of the meeting to include more time for participants to connect with each other outside of the breakout sessions for the sub-groups. We also decided to create a reading group, which will be open to all participants. The reading group will meet in between the monthly meetings as well.
The group will continue to meet on the third Thursday of each month. (See the list of 2022 meeting dates below.)
