Editor's Note: In September 2025, SBN began the process of developing a strategic plan which identifies key priorities and projects. After many meetings involving members of the SBN Board of Directors and several activists within the SBN community, the Board approved a new strategic plan on June 10.

The vision, mission, and goals of the strategic plan are provided below.

SBN Strategic Action Plan

Recognizing the current volatility of nation states, the demise of democratic institutions and warming trends across the planet, this consensus-based strategic action plan offers a flexible, multiyear approach for the SBN, to be reviewed and adjusted annually.

Vision

The Secular Buddhist Network is an interconnected global community and resource for study, practice and social engagement within the context of a secular dharma.

Mission

The Secular Buddhist Network is dedicated to increasing human flourishing in harmony with all life on the planet and to addressing the ethical and social challenges of the world through furthering the understanding and creative practice of the dharma.

GOAL 1: Global and Diverse

Lead and support a lively, geographically diverse and inclusive online presence and in communities to increase understanding of secular Buddhism and promote critical examination of Buddhist ethics and principles within individual and societal contexts.

GOAL 2: Accessibility

Develop and maintain a diverse suite of accessible activities (groups, learning resources and events) to address the spectrum of interests and needs among the global SBN community.

GOAL 3: Inter-connectiveness and Social Engagement within the SBN sangha

Increase connectivity and participation within and across multicultural SBN groups through collaborative study and reflection to bridge individual practice (meditation) with external work (advocacy, activism, community support) to promote individual and societal change, affirming that individual and world transformation are interdependent.

GOAL 4: Partnerships

Develop collaborative partnerships with groups and organizations with shared values to witness, challenge and respond to the ongoing violation of norms and institutions that are the foundations of free societies.

Goal 5: Organizational Sustainability and Governance

Assure a sustainable future for SBN by: offering targeted programs and events; fostering collaborative leadership; demonstrating our share values; establishing institutional norms and a Code of Ethics to support our internal and external relationships; encouraging an organization-wide culture of generosity, support, and dana (of both our time and resources) and creating and maintaining a supportive Fiscal Plan.
